Open M2M uses a flexible SMS delivery policy, as IoT devices have different needs from SMS as traditional cellphones, we describe how our delivery policy operates below.

Incoming SMS

Incoming SMS follows the following delivery policy

  • 3 delivery attempts at 5 minute intervals (at 5,10,15 minute elapsed)
  • 8 delivery attempts at 1 hour interval (at 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 hours elapsed)
  • Delivery attempt based on device registration to network*

After 18 hours the SMS expires, this is to avoid overloading the network.

Outgoing SMS

An outgoing SMS is processed and handed over to the remote operator of the number you're trying to reach.

Please note that toll numbers are blocked.

* Network registration SMS delivery may not be guaranteed if your device maintains connection for only a short time (e.g. less than 10 seconds).
