We offer two types of SIM cards: Standard and Industrial. While the standard SIM card suffices for most general IoT use cases, we also have Industrial SIM cards for more demanding applications. This article outlines the key differences between these two options.

TLDR; Unless you have need for longer (20+ year) lifecycle, higher security or plan to operate in extreme environments, the standard sim will be just fine.

What are Standard and Industrial SIM cards?

Standard SIM cards are designed to provide reliable connectivity for most IoT applications, offering a suitable range of temperatures and data integrity.

Industrial SIM cards go a step further, engineered to meet the demands of more intense environments, ensuring higher temperature tolerance and prolonged data integrity.

What are the main differences between Standard and Industrial SIM cards?

Here's a brief comparison table outlining the key differences:

  Standard Industrial
Form Factors 2FF/3FF/4FF & Embedded
Processor SC000 32bit ARM Cortex-M3 32bit
User Memory 480Kb 512Kb
Lifespan 25 years at 25°C 30 years at 25°C,
10 years at 105°C
Voltages 1.8v, 3v and 5v 1.8v, 3v and 5v
Erase/Write cycles 100,000 500,000
Erase/Write cycles per 64Kb 10 Million 50 Million
Power saving standby Yes Yes

Asyncrhonous ISO 7816-3 Yes Yes
CPU Clockspeed up to 28Mhz up to 15Mhz
Usage GSM & ETSI Yes Yes

Features for Industrial sim cards:

Industrial sim standards:
Environmental parameter monitoring
Protection against faults
ISO 3309 CRC calculation block
True random number generator
Unique serial ID on each die

Temperature Range

While Standard SIM cards can handle temperatures up to 85°C, Industrial SIM cards are built for more extreme conditions, capable of functioning at temperatures up to 105°C. This makes Industrial SIM cards an excellent choice for applications with higher thermal requirements.

Read/Write Cycles

Industrial SIM cards have an increased number of read/write cycles. This means they can perform more operations before wearing out, making them more suitable for applications that require frequent data exchanges.

Data Integrity Duration

Data integrity refers to the longevity of the stored data. Industrial SIM cards offer up to 25 years of data integrity, 5 years more than the Standard SIM cards. This longer-lasting data preservation is crucial for applications where long-term data retention is essential.

Which SIM card should I choose for my IoT application?

  • Choose the Standard SIM Card if: Your IoT application operates within normal environmental conditions and doesn't require excessive read/write cycles.
  • Choose the Industrial SIM Card if: Your IoT application functions in a more demanding environment with higher temperatures or needs higher read/write cycles and longer data integrity.

Conclusion

Both Standard and Industrial SIM cards are suitable for IoT applications, but they cater to different needs and environments. Assessing your specific requirements will guide you in selecting the right SIM card that ensures optimum performance and longevity for your IoT devices.
